FEBRUARY 2008

Dear Puerto Friends:

It is an exciting time in Puerto Aventuras and we are pround of the successes achieved during the 2007 year and to mention just a few

The launching of FOPA's new website, www.FriendsofPA.com
     Enrollment of 1,000th student
Graduation classes for our English Students
Generous donation of computer equipment for our Computer Classes
     The Mayitas Kids Club

The year 2008 is off to a great beginning with BIG NEWS!!!  The entire Poblado has running water at last for all the homes.  No longer does half of the Poblado have to rely on water trucks to fill up the water tanks on top of their homes.  HOORAY!!

The Mayitas Kids Club has started up again after the holidays.   Their activities relate to world culture... songs, games, plays, arts and crafts.  Last year they concentrated on the Maya  and Egyptian cultures.  For their crafts projects, coloring books were made about those cultures and last fall the kids put on a play with a program theme "Egyptian History" for the community.  We are looking forward to the new cultures that they will be studying this year.

For the kids' personal safety and because of an incident in the Poblado that occurred unrelated to the Kids Club there is going to be a coloring book created this semester about children's awareness to adults.

The English class has 30 students currenty enrolled and Computer classes are going well.  The computer club is open to everyone on Monday nights and is jam packed with kids doing their homework and adults from the class honing their skills.

The "Jobs Board" is in full swing.  People crowd around every Monday when new jobs are posted, take down the particulars and then head for the phone across the street.  Also, posted on the Board is a wonderful handout on "How To Get A Job" which gives valuable information.

We are still striving to make our budget of $24,000 USD for the 2008 year.  These necessary funds pay for the classroom rental, our teachers and supplies.  It is said that an education unlocks doors in a person's life and by providing these resources the people of the Pobaldo can better provide for their families.  By equipping these children, young adults and adults with an education that will enable and empower them to chase their dreams... these are the ways to fight poverty... not by doing things for people, but teaching them to do things for themselves.

Your donation can make a big difference in the lives of the people in the Poblado.  Please visit our website www.FriendsofPA.com to make your donation or stop by and see us when in Puerto Aventuras.

As always, we thank you for your continued support.

Sincerely,

FRIENDS OF PUERTO AVENTURAS BOARD OF DIRECTORS
